Famous Hong Kong director Ann Hui On Wa appeared at the 77th Venice Film Festival and received her Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion award from the Australian Oscar winning Best Actress Cate Blanchett. She became the world's first female director and the first Chinese female director to receive the honor. The 73 year old Hui On Wa at the award ceremony said, "The award brings encouragement to me and the people of Hong Kong. I want to bring the honor to the Hong Kong!" Director Hui showed her real passion for Hong Kong.

The 73 year old Hong Kong director Hui On Wa received this Venice Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion Award for her contribution to the international film community. She was also the first female director to receive this honor. Hui On Wa received the award from this year's official competition jury chair Cate Blanchett. She accepted the award with a mask on, later took it off for photos as she excitedly kissed the award.

Due to the global novel coronavirus pandemic, Hui On Wa revealed that she almost was unable to board the plane to Venice. At the award ceremony she said, under the current difficulties this award brought her and the people of Hong Kong encouragement. She wanted to give this honor to Hong Kong, because Hong Kong was where she grew up and spent her life, provided her with education, life experience and opportunities to actualize her own self worth. She promised to help young filmmakers so they would be able to receive Lifetime Achievement Awards in the future. Earlier Hong Kong director John Woo (Ng Yu Sunm) in 2010 also received the Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion Award. Famous English star Tilda Swinton also was a recipient of this year's Achievement Award.

The Hui On Wa directed film based on Eileen Chang's novel, LOVE AFTER LOVE was selected for this year's Venice Film Festival. Hui On Wa this year aside from accepting an award of course did not forget to promote the film. However LOVE AFTER LOVE's lead actor Eddie Peng Yu-Yan was only able to appear over video at the film festival press conference. He praised Hui On Wa as an outstanding director who gave him a lot of space to demonstrate his acting. He described his relationship with Hui On Wa was like friends. He also revealed that Director Hui would privately give him books and movies, and he said that he seriously read and watched them.

Hui On Wa said that LOVE AFTER LOVE's production procedure was difficult. "We just completed production, the Hong Kong street movement began......the pandemic followed, during which the production used Zoom to communicate. This was an unusual production process, but reflected how Hong Kong filmmakers persisted to make the movie its best."

LOVE AFTER LOVE's story was about a Shanghai school girl Ge Weilong, who came to study in Hong Kong and went to live with her aunt Mrs. Leung. Mrs. Leung used her as bait to attract men. Ge Weilong gradually became obsessed in all the glitter. Later she was drawn to play Qiao Qiqiao. In order to continue their upper class social lives they were willing to sell their souls. She spent all of her effort into marrying Qiao Qiqiao, bu finally became her aunt Mrs. Leung and Qiao Qiqiao's money making tool.

Actually Hui On Wa and the Venice Film Festival had quite a connection, once serving as Venice Film Festival "Horizon" segment's jury chair. Her film A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) in 2012 received awards at the Venice Film Festival.

Yuen Fu Wa was nominated again after the Golden Horse Awards. He thanked the event for giving him the chance to observe with other Asian film workers. The lack of an award ceremony this year due to the pandemic was regrettable. He wished that the pandemic would soon pass, everyone would be able to resume work normally. The Louis Koo Tin Lok starred anti corruption STORM film series yesterday released its fifth film G STORM (G FUNG BO)'s teaser. Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen) and Bosco Wong Chung Chak joined the cast. Director David Lam Tak Lun even described this installment as the final chapter, hinting an end ot the "STORM" series.

In the 40 second teaser were many car chases, explosions, gun fights in the city. Koo Tin Lok described this case being even more complicated than before and explained what the G stood for this time. "G actually has double meaning, first Chilam (Julian Cheung) is G4. The second explanation is that the Independent Commission Against Corruption has a G unit that is responsible for undercover. We want to show a special organization in different departments through this letter G."

Chilam this time would become G4 to protect a judge Suen Huen, as he would team up with ICAC against an international human trafficking group. In the footage Chilam protected Suen Huen on the highway and he opened fire to fend off terrorists.

Playing brothers, Kevin Cheng Ka Wing and Wong Chung Chak were being chased on the streets of Central and even jumped from an overpass. Reportedly this time the team successfully applied to shoot on location at the Cultural Center in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Space Museum, and Central, greatly increasing the audience's ability to relate.

Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and director Wong Hing Fan earlier appeared on Hong Kong Open Television to talk about their new film. Sing Sing in the film played a homeless man, fortunately he did not have such an experience. "However when I was little a friend worked in cleaning, during the shoot when I was using the cleaning machine I had quite a experience. On the entire team only I knew how to use it. Without this life experience how could I convince myself to play this role?"

Playing a fallen singer, Chin Wa in the film had no regret in love, never gave up. Sing Sing made fun of her as "obsessed". Chin Wa said, "In reality I really am, haha! However it's not obsession, it's crazy! Actually I feel at different age how people read into love is different, especially women! When you were young you had a lot of asset, ABCD you could ad an E! However when you were still alone in the 30s you would start to take the initiative and strike! When you were still by yourself in the 40s, you really would be lonely and unhappy! You hope to find a soul mate who knows how to share the burden with you!"

First time director Wong Hing Fan on the first day of work immediately faced a test of his abilities from Sing Sing. Sing Sing noticed that when the director watched the playback his eyes seemed to be speaking it could be a little better. Later after another take he took another glimpse at the director and saw him smiling a little and nodding!

Today would have been the late superstar Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing (Gor Gor)'s 65th birthday. Gor Gor's record label Universal worked on Gor Gor's classics anew. The first plug SEASONS A BALLOON'S JOURNEY and its musci video was uploaded globally at midnight today and brought something news for this special day of Gor Gor's 64th birthday. Although Gor Gor already passed away for 17 years, his singing would always remain in the hearts of music fans. As one of the younger generation Eason Chan Yik Shun praised Gor Gor for being sincere and unassuming, while Sandra Lam Yik Lin, who worked with Gor Gor, felt very nostalgic and sentimental when she heard Gor Gor's singing!

The release of the first plug SEASONS A BALLOON'S JOURNEY also signaled the beginning of Cheung Kwok Wing's all new collection REVISIT. Eason said, "Gor Gor was a cool, calm, and sincere person. When I first heard SEASONS, I had a feeling of wind blowing gently on a great grass plain. Then after this gust of wind carried me through the four seasons, I returned to a hopeful state of mind in anticipation of another prosperous spring, summer, autumn and winter." Eason was looking forward to the release of this song very much. "Tong Yik Chun (Gary)'s all new arrangement would put what kind of new wine into this old bottle? What kind of feeling would everyone have after savoring it again?"

If he and Gor Gor were in music during the same era, Eason said, "I definitely would invite him, hoping that he would sing with me!"

Having worked with Gor Gor, Yik Lin also missed Gor Gor's voice. "When I hear Gor Gor's singing I feel very nostalgic and sentimental, at the same time I also sense how unexpected life is. I hope everyone would cherish those around them."

This time the REVISIT collection invited Alvin Leung Wing Chun, the record producer who worked with Gor Gor countless times, music producer Tong Yik Chung and C.Y. Kong to reshape past classics anew and once again give Gor Gor's immortal legend the definition of the ear. Alvin said, "I have always wanted to redo some of Gor Gor's music. This year happens to be the 50th anniversary of PolyGram, like an reunion of old friends. So I gave this collection the title 'REVISIT'."

When it came to the mental journey of this production, Gary was not under the pressure. "Because I am familiar with Gor Gor's music, I hope to bring back what Gor Gor liked for others." However, C.Y. Kong thought it was something different. "Gor Gor's music has many representative features. Music fans are already familiar with them. Arranging them anew is not an easy task."

Yesterday would have been the superstar of a generation Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's 64th birthday. Although Gor Gor passed away 17 years ago, his friends and fans still missed him. Anita Yuen Wing Yee, Chan Suk Fun, Karen Mok Man Wai, Leo Ku Kui Ke all posted photos to remember him. Among them Rachel Lee Lai Chun posted an old photo to her late friends Law Ming Chu and Gor Gor, both would have celebrated their birthdays. Daffy Tong Hok Tak even quoted Gor Gor's lyrics, "Even apart is like being together!"

Gor Gor's beloved Daffy Tong Hok Tak every year would remember him at midnight of Gor Gor's birthday. This year he posted a photo of a smiling Gor Gor cutting cake with a verse from Gor Gor's hit SPEND TOGETHER, "'Even apart is like being together', Happy Birthday Gor Gor!"

Anita Yuen Wing Yee was also very thoughful. Yesterday at 5AM she posted, "Gor Gor, Happy Birthday!" Famous fashion designer Lau Pui Kei posted a photo with Gor Gor. "We all carry the past into the masses!" Film company boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming who worked with Gor Gor countless times. "You are missed!" Leo Ku Kui Kei posted Gor Gor's photo as Ouyang Fung in ASHES OF TIMES to remember her. In addition, Tai Chi's Patrick Lui Yau Fai, Calvin Choy Yat Chi, Benjamin Yuen Man Kit, and Renee Dai Mung Mung all wished Gor Gor "Happy Birthday!"

Karen Mok Man Wai also posted an early photo with Cheung Kwok Wing to celebrate his birthday. "This phoo was probably our earlier photo together (on the set of the 1996 film VIVA EROTICA). Dear Uncle Leslie, Happy Birthday, Missing You, Karen."

Lee Lai Chun posted two photos, one was the film HAPPY GHOST's poster and the other was her photos with Cheung Kwok Wing and Bonnie Lo Ming Chu from the film FOR YOUR HEART ONLY. When Chu Mui first started she formed the Happy Girls with Law Ming Chu, who passed away 4 years ago, on the HAPPY GHOST movies. Two days ago (September 11th) would have been Lo Ming Chu's 52nd birthday. Yesterday also would have been Gor Gor's birthday. Chun Mui remembered them both.

As for Gor Gor's manager Chan Suk Fun, she not only posted her photo with Gor Gor but also quoted Gor Gor's STARTING FROM ZERO lyrics to wish Leslie Happy Birthday. Mrs. Chan also went to Po Fook Hill with her son Chan Ka Ho to celebrate "Gor Gor's" birthday.

Due to the pandemic, Mrs. Chan did not met with "Gor" fans and friends as in previous years. However "Gor Gor's" friend Lin Yim Fai, former assistant Kenneth and some Hong Kong "Gor" fans did not forget this important day as they still went to visit "Gor Gor". Mrs. Chan brought "Gor Gor's" favorite food and fruit, a rose heart shaped cake and a floral arrangement for "Gor Gor" who loved fresh flowers. The colorful flowers added brilliant colors to "Gor Gor's" birthday.

The novel coronavirus did not stop "Gor" fans' love for "Gor Gor". Overseas "Gor" fans, although were unable to come to Hong Kong in person, still sent birthday wishes to "Gor Gor" in different ways. Some ordered various flower baskets and turned Po Fook Hill into a sea of flowers; some worried about postal delivery delays and sent birthday cards very early on, asking Mrs. Chan to deliver them. A Mainland "Gor" fan who moved to Japan even personally folded two strands of origami cranes. Mrs. Chan yesterday brought these "Gor" fan's presents to Po Fook Hill to give to "Gor Gor".

Time flies. 2023 will be the 20th anniversary of "Gor Gor's" passing. Mrs. Chan was considered memorial activity formats and urged "Gor" fans to make suggestions to the fan club, as she hoped to satisfy everyone's request.

[2020.09.13] TAM BING MAN REVEALED THE REASON OF NOT VISITNG LEE HEUNG KAM

In memory of the five field artist Tam Bing Man's contribution to Hong Kong music, film, televsion, broadcasting and voice over, radio stations yesterday aired an interview with Brother Bing as a salute.

Brother Bing's final recorded radio interview was on Yeung Siu Hung and Elena Kong Mei Yee's program. The program aired last night. Speaking of Brother Bing's renowned "Best Partner" Lee Heung Kam's dementia after a stroke, Yeung Siu Hung revealed that last year he asked Brother Bing to visit Sister Kam together. However Brother Bing turned him down right away because Brother Bing's heart ached when his buddy could not even recognize him.

Yesterday another radio program also played Brother Bing's interview in 2017. In it Brother Bing also mentioned that he visited Sister Kam, but Sister Kam could not really recognize people. Even when they met he did not know whether she would recognized him. He lamented, "She originally was a smart person, now she has to suffer in the world. Sigh! Life is truly hard to predict." Brother Bing pointed out that he admired Sister Kam for treating people well. With her he had the best chemistry, he also ignored decades of rumors with Sister Kam. "I don't care about what people say, let them talk. I pretend they are dumb." Has Bing Soh been jealous? Brother Bing said, "Whether she was or not, I couldn't care less. It's been decades. Now I won't have any goal, however many years I enjoy is however many years I live."

Brother Bing over the years helped many of the younger generations. He was even Hong Kong's first generation horseracing commentator. Back then RTV wanted to have a program to discuss horseracing like overseas, when asked if he had the guts to try, young Brother Bing had the guts to try anything and became the first person to discuss horseracing in all of Hong Kong. Bill Tung only appeared years later. Later TVB opened and invited Brother Bing to join. Brother Bing without any interpretation provided his voice to animation, films and commercials. "DORAEMON's" voice actor Lam Po Chuen also learned from Brother Bing. Brother Bing also revealed that for another classic anime DR. SLUMP, he would rather provide his voice to King Nikochan than to the protagonist. "Back then many voice actors were following me. TVB originally wanted me to provide the voice to Dr. Slump, but I was lazy and didn't want to star in every show. I wanted to give others an opportunity. So I told TVB to let Fung Kam Lun give it a try. He was OK after one or two takes. Then I played King Nikochan. For the same money as voice over for a movie, I didn't need to work too much."

Silently working for many years, Brother Bing never thought about retiring. "I am used to working, what am I going to do but staring at four walls at home? Going to do voice over at TVB could kill time, and I can chat with young people. Walking and taking public transportation can be exercise, being at home is very dull."

The new director Wong Hing Fan directed, Soi Cheang Pou Soi produced, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Cheung Tat Ming and Zeno Koo Ting Hin starred film I'M LIVIN' IT (MAK LO YUN). Last night a premiere took place in Tsim Sha Tsui. Boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok also showed his support. The film will open simultaneously in Hong Kong, the Mainland, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Sing Sing said that the film was finished for two years. He was very happy that everyone was finally able to see it. He also received many fans' messages that they were looking forward to the film release very much. He pointed out that the film originally was scheduled for release last Christmas, but due to the pandemic it was cancelled. Although the pandemic was still not under completely control, he hoped that viewers would slowly leave negative emotions. The best way was to watch movies, especially this positive movie.

The film earlier had a few advanced screenings. Sing Sing said that he was very happy about the good word of mouth. Has his wife Moka Fang seen the film yet? Sing Sing revealed that his wife was moved to tears. "My wife tonight came to watch it with me. After watching it my wife was sobbing and weeping. (How did you comfort your wife?) I was sobbing and weeping with her. My wife saw it once before, this was the second time. I watched it four times and cried every time, because the character affected me."

Chin Wa agreed that viewers should bring tissues with them. Sing Sing felt that tissues were not enough, they should bring handkerchief. Would Chin Wa bring his son to see this film? She said, "When my son is a little older he can watch it. I would watch with him and explain to him, because the film has a lot of positive energy." She also said that as an actor, she felt that this performance was very rich because she truly came to perform as a stranger. It was her first time working with all the actors, and she joined the cast midway through. However she did not feel strange at all. Instead she even felt the great team spirit. The film content had tension. Everyone were good co-stars.

Speaking of Alex Man Chi Leung's absence from the promotion, Sing Sing said that Man Ji Gor was a very professional actor. He was currently in Guangzhou and had long term illness, but for the film he stopped his medication. He said, "I am particularly happy because Man Ji Gor said that no matter how sick or how difficult he still wanted to work with me. We haven't worked together for 30 years since the television series GENGHIS KHAN. Working with Man Ji Gor was very memorable. I wish his condition would improve and good health, I want to work with him again."

Paw Hee Ching said that although her role was minor, the film was very touching and very positive. In particular it was about how the lowest level of the community struggled to survive. After watching you definitely would cry. She herself watched twice and cried both times.

Artist Alien Huang yesterday was found dead in his Taipei residence at age 36. According to the police's initial investigation announcement, Alien Huang accidentally slipped while leaving the bathroom, injuring his head. He lay outside the bathroom and passed away. When found his body was already in rigor mortis. His first love Rainie Yang said, "I have no way to describe how much pain I am in". Jacky Wu said that he could not accept Alien's passing at all. "I even promised him, at least next year (at the Golden Bell Award) I would be able to bring him on stage."

Alien Huang's father upon learning the news of his passing was in sorrow. He said that his son two days ago just had dinner with his family, he did not know why something like this would happen. Alien Huang started in show business in 2002, was once the lead host of 100% ENTERTAINMENT and guest starred in the recent hit series SOMEDAY OR ONE DAY. Alien Huang's best know romance was his first love with Rainie Yang. Rainie Yang once said, "At the time I even thought of marrying him in the future." Even though they broke up and Rainie Yang wed Mainland singer Li Ronghao, they talked about each other without any hesitation. Alien Huang also was a guest a Rainie Yang's 2018 concert. Rainie Yang said about her old flame's passing, "I have no way to describe how much pain I am in. Alien to me has always existed like family. When I learned this news I really had no way to accept it. His goodness, I would always remember. Everyone please remember his hard working, serious and talented face. I would always miss him......" Because of emotional breakdown, Rainie Yang has turned down all the jobs scheduled for that afternoon. Her husband Li Ronghao and Alien Huang were also friends. Li Ronghao said, "I really don't dare to believe it, he was such a good person. Friend, farewell."

Alien Huang's current girlfriend "Cheerleader Goddess" Wu Han Chun originally was scheduled for a TVBS program taping. Before she got a call she did not know that her boyfriend has already passed. Currently she has already cancelled all jobs. Alien and Chun Chun met on a program and fell in love. They publicized their romance in June this year.

Alien Huang during his years in show business stepped foot in variety program, singing, drama, and was great with people. Because 22 hours before he even shared a cute video of his dog on social media, the sudden news left many friends in the circle with no way to accept it. He and Show Luo host 100% ENTERTAINMENT. Piggy posted, "Why would it be like this?" His KO ONE co-star Aaron Yan wrote, "Alien, sorry, I didn't often meet up with you, but thank you for taking care of me and Gui Gui (Emma Wu) on MYSTERIOUS INCREDIBLE TERMINATOR. I am very sad, farewell RIP." Mickey Huang posted that his wife Summer Meng worked with Alien Huang on a drama. "The Road of Trends had you, the Road of Arts had you, the leader of leftover women's bodyguard, my wife kept thanking you. How can it be so sudden like this. We will miss you and always always remember you." Alien Huang's high school classmate Tiffany Hsu posted, "Tomorrow we scheduled a classmate reunion, originally you said you had to work. We would go on as schedule and save you a seat, because tomorrow you wouldn't have to work, you would be attend......" Dee Hsu, Michelle Chen, Alyssa Chia and others all posted their sorrow and how much they would miss Alien Huang.

Alien Huang although started in a boy band, he caught attention as a variety program host. In 2006 he became the 100% ENTERTAINMENT host, after taking the baton he host for almost 10 years. In 2015 he was nominated for the 50th Golden Bell Award Variety Program host but lost. In the same year he resigned from 100% ENTERTAINMENT and focused on his singing career. In 2018 he returned to hosting and joined MR. PLAYER as a host. Risking everything without any regard for his image, he was very memorable for the audience. In 2019 he was nominated for a Golden Bell game or reality show host award but again the prize passed him by. His MR. PLAYER co-host Jacky Wu remembered, "He passed away without winning a single Golden Bell Award. I even promised him that at least next year I would be able to bring him to the stage."

Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin earlier were guests on TVB Entertainment News program STARTALK and talked about their experience on their film FATAL VISIT (SING HOR SAI MAU SAK ONG).

The film was adapted from a play. They both said that they have not seen the play for research. Sammi felt the choice of not seeing it was the right one. "After getting the script the more I didn't seeing the play the more right I was not to, because (Alice) Lau Nga Lai starred in the play. If I saw it I would be even more nervous. Her performance was so good. In addition was afraid that I would imitate her performance and put myself in a box, so I wanted to use my way to perform the role, the most isolated the better."

Sammi's performance in the film received high praises but Sammi had no expectation for awards. "This time was the spring of the performance, not the spring of winning awards. Today awards are very low priority for me. You know after my years of experience, I put something like an award at an even lower priority. If one day I won I of course would be hpapy, but I haven't expected one."

Ah Sa said that being able to work with good actors would improve herself. "During the shoot, I didn't dare to bother other actors, like Tong Dawei and Sammi have many scenes that required a lot of strength and were very heavy. When I saw Sammi in a crying scene she won me over even more. I am something could cry fast and end fast. If I kept crying, I wouldn't be able to after awhile. Sammi was amazing though, she has so much tear! In one scene she was already crying starting from when she read the script. After she was done with the scene she still couldn't stop."

Ah Sa who has been frequently working on movies in recent years joked that she suddenly got it. "I realized that I had to keep the motor running for work, the motor can't be stopped for too long because when it starts up again it would sputter. However a year or two earlier I chose my roles because I wanted to prove people wrong. However these scripts didn't come by all the time. Later I realized that I should work while I could, I shouldn't think so much. Now there are fewer and fewer movies, if anyone asks you then you should work!"

Director Calvin Poon Yuen Leung pointed out that the Sammi played Sister Ling was an extremely difficult role. Each time she came to the set, Sammi would have her notes so she already has done her hoemwork and would perform at her best. Sammi joked that previous film productions often lacked scripts, so doing homework was very hard. This film not only had a complete script, but also before the shoot she had very clear communication with the director and the producer. Everyone knew what method they would use to perform. In order to play Sister Ling, Sammi even gained ten pounds on her own. She said, "The audience might not be able to tell the difference at first glimpse, as I just gained eight to ten pounds. The overall behavior would obviously differ from mine, which helped with getting into character even more."

Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Priscilla Wong Chui Yu, Kayla Wong Man Hei and sister Irisa Wong Lai Ka, and the now completely recovered from prostate cancer Ryan Hui Wai Yan attended a photography exhibit. Chan Ka Lok and rumored girlfriend Shiga Lin's friend Chui Yu met for the first time and spoke to the media together. Ka Lok had a healthy tan. He revealed that lately he constantly hiked, ran and waterski, but he stressed that he went waterskiing with a great swimmer Michelle Wai Sze Nga. When asked if he went hiking with Shiga Lin, he avoided the subject and said, "I went waterskiing with Wai Sze Nga."

Actually it was the firs time Chui Yu and Ka Lok met. Chui Yu hoped to have a chance to work with him later and praised how handsome he was. He probably had a lot of girls who were fond of him. Ka Lok returned the compliment and praised Chui Yu as pretty, fit, and tall. Appearing embarrassed, he asked the media to keep the subject on his work. Then he revealed that he just finished a Lunar New Year film BUK YUT SING FUN (COMING SOON WEDDING). As an onscreen couple he and Wai Sze Nga had differences in opinions when it came to marriage. She wanted to wed but he did not. Did Ka Lok want to get married in real life? He said, "I am not in a hurry, I want to work hard first since I haven't made enough money yet. (What about her?) No comment, I don't know how to answer." Chui Yu helped out and told everyone to ask her questions about marriage because she had knowledge in this area. Did Shiga ask her about marriage? She said, "yes, she asked about my overseas wedding. Actually Shiga is a good girl, very kind, so as long as she is happy it's fine."

MULAN opens sluggishly in Hong Kong

A protestor calls for a MULAN boycott in Korea

courtesy of mingpao.com

The Mainland star Crystal Liu Yifei starred, US$ 200 million Disney live action film MULAN yesterday opened "under a low profile" at 45 cinemas. As of 6PM its box office was only six figures. MULAN yesterday also opened in Korea. As of 6PM its half day admission was only 12,763 people as MULAN boycott protests took place there. Lead actor Liu Yifei in August last year openly expressed her support for Hong Kong Police, leading to an internet backlash and call to "BoycottMulan". In addition its end credit thanked the Xinjiang government and ministries, which also led to controversy. No one knows whether those reasons affected the box office.

MULAN yesterday quietly opened in Hong Kong without much promotion in advance. At the Times Square UA, no MULAN display could be seen. The 9:30PM showing still had plenty of seats two hours before. As of 6PM, MULAN accumulated HK$ 103,077. Also opening yesterday was the Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa starred I'M LIVIN' IT (MAK LO YUN), as of 6PM it made around HK$ 320,000. TENET as of 9PM reached HK$ 1.364 million and continued to top the single day box office.

MULAN opened on the same day in Korea. As of 6PM, the admission rate was only 12,763 people. According to Korean media reports, yesterday "Declaration of Global Citizens" representative Lee Seoll-a held an one-person rally against the film's release in front of the CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall branch. "Declaration of Gloabl Citizen" condemned the film's release in Korea, said that many were illegally arrested in Hong Kong and the Korean people would remember and support them.

Last year during the Hong Kong social movement, Liu Yifei in August posted on Weibo "I also support the Hong Kong Police", triggered an internet backlash and led to the Boycott Mulan movement.

In March this year when MULAN held its U.S. premiere then its U.K. premiere in London, many protesters were on hand and raised MULAN parody posters in protest. With the novel coronavirus pandemic, MULAN postponed its release many times around the world. In September it was released on the streaming platform Disney+.

As the pandemic eased, MULAN opened on September 11th in the Mainland. Although Liu Yifei released firm praise from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs press spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, "She (Liu Yifei) earlier expressed strong support for the HK Police. I feel she is the modern Hua Mulan. She is a real child of China." However the Mainland audience did not seem to care. According to the largest online ticket sales platform in the Mainland, Cat's Eye, as for September 16th the film's cumulative box office was over 201 million RMB -- below THE 800, which was already in its third week of release. American film and television data analyst Jeff Bock said, "This is a disappointing opening number. Disney tailored this film for the Mainland audience but they don't care."

After MULAN's release it also ran into trouble overseas due to its end credit thanks to one of the locations Xinjiang's publicity and public security departments. 19 U.S. lawmakers last Friday (the 11th) issued a joint letter to Disney chief Bob Chapek, urging him to clarify the Chinese government connection to MULAN. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Zhao Lijian felt that MULAN thanking the Xinjiang authorities for the convenience they provided the production could not be more normal and reiterated that Xinjiang and Hong Kong policies were purely China's internal affairs, which no foreign government, organization or individuals had any right to interfere with.
